Most travelers want to plan the right itinerary using their limited time and budget wisely — dreaming of discovering a new world and enjoying the freedom of a getaway. That’s why I started this blog: to help you design a clear, realistic plan and start your Korean adventure with confidence. πŸ™️ Seeing Seoul with Fresh Eyes I was born and raised in Seoul, but after living in Canada for many years, coming back felt like stepping into a completely new world. So much had changed — new buildings, new trends, even new ways of life. As I explored the city again, this time as a returning expat, I started to understand Seoul in a different way. That’s when I decided to share my experience to help people who are visiting Korea for the first time. 🌏 Why So Many People Want to Visit Korea These days, Korea is more popular than ever, thanks to K-pop, K-dramas, and social media. People from all over the world are excited to see the places they’ve only watched on screen. But Korea isn’t just abou...

Tips for Itinerary 2: Changdeokgung Palace and Surrounding Area

A perfect blend of royal charm and hidden local gems

Changdeokgung Palace is one of Seoul’s most beloved palaces — and for good reason. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands out for its graceful architecture and its stunning harmony with nature.
If you want to experience the quieter, more intimate side of Korea’s royal legacy, this is the place to start. And with several nearby spots worth visiting, you can easily build a full day of exploration around it.

πŸ›️ Main Attractions (within or right next to Changdeokgung)

Changdeokgung Palace

Built in the early 15th century, Changdeokgung was favored by many kings of the Joseon Dynasty for its natural, peaceful layout. It’s smaller and less imposing than Gyeongbokgung, but that’s part of its charm.
Changdeokgung Palace

Huwon (Secret Garden)

This is the true highlight of Changdeokgung. The Secret Garden is a vast inner garden hidden behind the palace, once used by the royal family for rest and reflection. With ponds, pavilions, ancient trees, and walking paths, it feels like stepping into a timeless oasis.
Note: Entry is only available through a guided tour, so make sure to reserve your spot in advance.

Donhwamun Gate

The majestic main gate of Changdeokgung is one of the oldest remaining palace gates in Korea — a great starting point for your visit and a popular photo spot.

Changgyeonggung Palace

Right next to Changdeokgung, this former residence of queens and concubines is connected through a rear gate. It’s a quieter, often overlooked site with peaceful gardens and greenhouses.

🧭 Nearby Neighborhoods Worth Exploring

Ikseon-dong Hanok Village

Just 10 minutes on foot, this trendy neighborhood is full of character. Hanok-style buildings house modern cafes, dessert shops, and boutique stores. It’s a fun contrast to the traditional palace atmosphere.

Jongmyo Shrine

Located just south of the palace, this serene site was used for royal ancestral rites. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers guided tours that give insight into Confucian traditions.

Unhyeongung Palace

A small, lesser-known royal residence nearby, once home to the father of King Gojong. It’s free to enter and usually not crowded — great for a quiet break or historical detour.

πŸ“ Itinerary Tip

Start your morning with a tour of Changdeokgung Palace — and don’t miss the Secret Garden (Huwon) tour, ideally booked in advance for early entry.
After the palace, head through the rear gate to explore Changgyeonggung. Once you’ve had your fill of royal history, take a walk to Ikseon-dong for lunch or coffee.
If time allows, you can go with a short visit to Jongmyo Shrine or Unhyeongung Palace.
You can also extend your route westward to Bukchon Hanok Village and Gyeongbokgung Palace, or head south toward Insadong, Jogyesa Temple, and the scenic Cheonggyecheon Stream.
This itinerary offers a perfect balance of culture, history, and modern charm — all within walking distance.

πŸ’‘ Final Thoughts

The Changdeokgung area is a quieter, more contemplative part of Seoul. It’s ideal for travelers who enjoy beautiful landscapes, historical depth, and discovering places at a relaxed pace.
By planning your route wisely and including nearby neighborhoods, you can enjoy a half-day or a full day of meaningful experiences without rushing.
