Most travelers want to plan the right itinerary using their limited time and budget wisely — dreaming of discovering a new world and enjoying the freedom of a getaway. That’s why I started this blog: to help you design a clear, realistic plan and start your Korean adventure with confidence. 🏙️ Seeing Seoul with Fresh Eyes I was born and raised in Seoul, but after living in Canada for many years, coming back felt like stepping into a completely new world. So much had changed — new buildings, new trends, even new ways of life. As I explored the city again, this time as a returning expat, I started to understand Seoul in a different way. That’s when I decided to share my experience to help people who are visiting Korea for the first time. 🌏 Why So Many People Want to Visit Korea These days, Korea is more popular than ever, thanks to K-pop, K-dramas, and social media. Tips for Itinerary 6: Hongdae and Surrounding Area

A lively district where art, music, and youth culture come alive

Hongdae (short for Hongik University area) is one of Seoul’s trendiest and most energetic neighborhoods. Known for its street performances, indie music, vintage shops, and creative cafés, it’s the place to go if you want to experience Korea’s youthful, artistic side.

Whether you’re into shopping, art, nightlife, or just people-watching, Hongdae is a dynamic area that never gets boring — day or night.

🏛️ Main Attractions (within or right next to Hongdae)

● Hongdae Walking Street

The heart of the district, packed with clothing shops, cafés, clubs, and live performers. You’ll find K-pop dancers, indie musicians, and artists sharing their talents, especially in the evenings and on weekends.

● Hongik University Street Art and Murals

Explore the narrow alleys behind Hongik University for some of Seoul’s best street art and murals. It’s perfect for photo lovers and those who enjoy a bohemian vibe.

● KT&G Sangsangmadang

A multi-level cultural space featuring galleries, indie films, design shops, and performances. A great place to catch local art and creativity in action.

● Trick Eye Museum & Ice Museum

An interactive experience with 3D optical illusion art — especially fun if you’re traveling with kids or friends who love playful photos.

● Hongdae Free Market (Weekends Only)

Held in Hongdae Playground Park on Saturdays, this outdoor market is where local artists and students sell handmade crafts, jewelry, and art.

🧭 Nearby Neighborhoods Worth Exploring

● Yeonnam-dong

Just across from Hongdae Station (Exit 3), this peaceful, artsy neighborhood is known for Gyeongui Line Forest Park and its charming alley cafés and bakeries.

● Mangwon Market & Mangridan-gil

A 15-minute walk or short ride away, Mangwon Market offers an authentic local food experience, while Mangridan-gil is a rising hipster zone full of cozy brunch spots and vintage shops.

● Sinchon & Ewha University Area

Two subway stops away, this university zone is filled with budget-friendly shops, beauty salons, and delicious food — great for a slightly less crowded alternative to Hongdae.

📝 Itinerary Tip

Arrive in Hongdae late morning or early afternoon and explore the street murals and shops first. Have lunch at one of the local cafes or try something quick at Hongdae Playground Market (if it's a weekend).
In the afternoon, visit KT&G Sangsangmadang or the Trick Eye Museum, then relax at Yeonnam-dong with a coffee in one of its quiet alley cafés.
Stick around for the evening street performances — it’s when Hongdae truly comes alive. If you’re up for it, end the night with live music or a themed bar.

💡 Final Thoughts

Hongdae is where Seoul’s creativity bursts out onto the streets. It’s loud, expressive, and full of energy — a must-see for those who want to dive into the city’s youth culture and artistic spirit.
By combining it with nearby Yeonnam-dong or Mangwon, you can balance the buzz with charm and quiet, making your day in western Seoul both exciting and memorable.
