Seoul Hiking Guide 3: Inwangsan Beginner Courses and Highlights

A short hike with royal views and spiritual landmarks


Inwangsan is one of the most accessible and symbolic mountains in central Seoul. Rising behind Gyeongbokgung Palace, it’s a compact peak that offers sweeping views of the city skyline, the Blue House, and Bugaksan to the north. Known for its rugged rock formations and shamanistic heritage, Inwangsan is a perfect half-day hike for those who want a dose of nature without leaving downtown.

This guide introduces one main beginner-friendly route that combines nature, history, and breathtaking views—all in under 2 hours.

 

Inwangsan Fortress Wall Trail

A panoramic ridge walk along Seoul’s old fortress wall

Duration: 1.5–2 hours round trip

🟢 Difficulty: Easy to moderate (short but includes stone stairs and ridgeline walking)

🧭 Trailhead: Inwangsan Jarak-gil / Changuimun Gate (창의문)

🚇 Subway Access:
Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3), Exit 3 → Take Green Bus #1020 or #7212 to Changuimun
→ Or: Dongnimmun Station (Line 3), Exit 2 → Walk uphill (~15 min) to Inwangsan Trail Start

Course Highlights:

▪ Walk alongside the Seoul Fortress Wall (서울성곽), a well-preserved stone barrier from the Joseon Dynasty

▪ Quick ascent rewards you with amazing views of Gyeongbokgung, Namsan Tower, and even Lotte Tower in the distance

▪ Pass by Seonbawi (선바위), a sacred rock believed to resemble a meditating monk—still used by shamans and locals for prayers

▪ End your walk near Bugaksan or loop back down toward Buam-dong, a charming village full of cafés and galleries
